MISMINAY COMMUNITY
Nestled high in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, at an altitude of over 12,000 feet, lies the vibrant community of Misminay.
This is more than just a picturesque village; it's a living testament to the enduring ancestral traditions of the Andes, offering travelers an authentic and enriching immersion into a way of life that has remained deeply connected to nature for centuries.
The Essence of Andean Life
In Misminay, time seems to flow to the rhythm of ancient customs. The local families, who primarily speak Quechua, have opened their doors to sustainable community tourism, allowing visitors to step away from the usual tourist trail and become part of their daily lives.
This "experiential tourism" is built on the principle of Ayni (reciprocity), where community members work together and share the benefits, ensuring that tourism positively impacts their quality of life.
Hands-On Cultural Immersion
Visitors to Misminay are not just observers; they are participants. The experience begins with a warm welcome featuring traditional music and dances, immediately making you feel like part of the family. Throughout your stay, you can engage in a variety of activities:
Traditional Agriculture: Depending on the season, you might help with sowing or harvesting using ancestral tools like the chaquitaclla (foot plow). This provides a direct insight into the traditional farming techniques that utilize terraced fields and honor Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (mountain spirits).
Textile Art: The women of Misminay are skilled weavers, using sheep's wool and natural dyes made from plants and minerals to create intricate, colorful textiles. Visitors can learn about this ancient art form in hands-on workshops.
Andean Gastronomy: Food is a communal experience here. You can participate in preparing and enjoying delicious traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients like quinoa, native potatoes, and corn, often using age-old methods like the Pachamanca.
Breathtaking Views and Starry Skies
The community is perfectly situated for a short hike to the Moray viewpoint, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the mysterious circular Inca agricultural terraces. At night, the high altitude and lack of light pollution create one of the clearest skies in the region, perfect for stargazing and listening to local stories by a bonfire.
A visit to Misminay is an unforgettable opportunity to connect with an authentic, living culture in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the world. It's a chance to truly "live history" instead of just reading about it.
Program:
We will visit the Andean community of Misminay, on the outskirts of Cusco, where you will be able to live with the traditions preserved by locals.
The tour to the village goes through native botanical species, crop fields, using a narrow and winding path that will take us to the village, located at 3,700 meters above sea level, and a natural balcony with a spectacular view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the snow-covered mountains. Families live alone in small single or double room houses, made out of adobe.
They raise guinea pigs (cuyes), cattle, and sheep. You will be able to plow or harvest the soil, depending on the time of the year, appreciate a toast to honor the earth—a ceremony in honor of Mother Earth— and enjoy a traditional lunch cooked by the ladies of Misminay, with naturally cultivated ingredients from their camps.
Additionally, you will observe the ladies spinning, wool dyeing with natural ingredients, and lastly, tapestry knitting, according to the ancient techniques.
