COUNTRYSIDE & SABANDÍA MILL

Just a short trip from Arequipa's bustling "White City" lies a tranquil countryside offering a rich blend of colonial history, natural beauty, and agricultural tradition. The green fields, framed by the towering volcanic peaks of Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu, present a picturesque escape. A visit here is an ideal way to appreciate the city's unique cultural heritage and stunning landscapes.

Molino de Sabandía: A Working Piece of History

At the heart of the Arequipa countryside experience is the Molino de Sabandía, a historic water mill that has stood since 1621. Constructed from sillar, the same white volcanic stone that gives Arequipa its famous nickname, the mill is a beautiful example of regional colonial architecture. Its sturdy buttresses, rustic balconies, and arched entrances have withstood centuries.

The mill's ingenious design uses the driving force of water from two ancient channels to turn massive stone wheels, which grind corn, wheat, and other grains into flour. Visitors can still see this process in action, observing how farmers pay a fee to use this time-honored method. This offers a fascinating glimpse into the agricultural ingenuity of the past, still relevant today.

Beyond its functional purpose, the mill is set within a lovely recreational area. Guests can wander through lush gardens and observe local flora, including a collection of cacti and succulents. The grounds are also home to native animals like llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, offering a delightful and educational experience.

Beyond the Mill: Exploring the Countryside

A trip to the Sabandía Mill is often part of a broader countryside tour that reveals more of the region's rural character. Popular excursions visit other historical sites and offer stunning natural views. The Founder's Mansion (La Mansión del Fundador), a 16th-century colonial estate, provides insight into the opulent lifestyle of Arequipa's early elite.

Meanwhile, a stop at the Yanahuara viewpoint, with its famous sillar arches, provides an unforgettable panorama of the city and its volcanoes. For an even wider perspective, the Sachaca viewpoint offers a magnificent city and volcanic vista from a multi-level tower.

Whether you're exploring the agricultural terraces of Paucarpata or enjoying a delicious meal at a traditional "picantería" restaurant, the Arequipa countryside provides a rich and immersive cultural journey. It's a journey into a time where history, nature, and tradition coalesce in a beautiful and unforgettable setting.

Program:

On this tour to the countryside surrounding Arequipa, you will pass through the district of Yanahuara with its quaint streets and modern residences. You will see the ornate doorway of the 17th-century church of San Juan de Yanahuara and typical countryside restaurants.
