BALLESTAS ISLANDS

The Ballestas Islands, located just off the coast of Peru's Paracas National Reserve, are a protected marine sanctuary teeming with an astonishing array of wildlife. Often dubbed the "Poor Man's Galapagos," these rocky islands and islets offer a vibrant ecosystem easily accessible via a short boat tour from the seaside town of Paracas.

A Marine Animal Extravaganza

Your boat trip to the Ballestas Islands will immerse you in a world of abundant marine fauna. The islands are home to vast colonies of sea lions, whose playful barks and calls echo across the water. You'll see them lounging on the sun-warmed rocks and splashing in the protected coves, particularly during the calving season from January to March.

The archipelago is also a crucial habitat for a diverse range of seabirds, which use the islands for nesting and feeding. The air is filled with the sight and sound of thousands of birds, including the Guanay cormorant, Peruvian boobies, and the charming, endangered Humboldt penguins. The sight of penguins thriving in this hot, arid climate is a striking reminder of the unique biodiversity created by the cold Humboldt Current.

The Mysterious Candelabra

On the way to the islands, tour boats pause to view the enigmatic Paracas Candelabra, a massive geoglyph carved into the face of a coastal desert hill. This prehistoric figure, which resembles a three-pronged candlestick, is estimated to be over 2,500 years old. While its exact origin and purpose remain a mystery, theories suggest it was either a navigational guide for sailors or a religious symbol of the ancient Paracas culture.

Sustainable Tourism and Conservation

As a protected area, the Ballestas Islands are managed with an eye toward conservation, meaning tourists cannot set foot on the islands themselves. However, the boat tours are designed to get you remarkably close to the action, allowing for incredible photography and unforgettable wildlife encounters. This approach minimizes human impact on the delicate ecosystem, ensuring its long-term preservation

Program:

Starting from the Paracas Hotel pier in the Pisco area, this 2-hour boat ride will lead you to visit the Ballestas Islands situated off the coast of the Paracas Reserve, Peru's largest coastal wildlife sanctuary. These two beautiful islands are home to thousands of resident migratory sea birds. These include pelicans, cormorants, and gulls, among others, who share their habitat with colonies of sea lions. On the way, you will also see one of the mysterious drawings etched on the desert face, the Candlestick.
