COLCA VALLEY
Colca Canyon in southern Peru offers a dramatic blend of natural wonder, indigenous culture, and high-altitude adventure. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, it was recognized as a Global Geopark by UNESCO in 2019. The canyon is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable Andean experience.
The Realm of the Majestic Condor
The most iconic and unforgettable sight at Colca is the majestic Andean condor. These massive birds, with wingspans of up to 3.5 meters, glide gracefully on the morning thermal currents. The prime viewing location is the Cruz del Condor viewpoint, where dozens of condors can often be seen between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.. Arriving early is recommended to avoid the heaviest crowds.
An Adventurer's Paradise
For the active traveler, Colca Canyon offers challenging and rewarding treks. Popular multi-day hikes descend from the village of Cabanaconde into the canyon's depths. Trekkers spend the night in rustic lodges at the bottom, including the lush, tropical oasis of Sangalle, before making the strenuous, steep climb back up. Be prepared for dramatic changes in elevation and steep, rocky trails, which require a moderate-to-high fitness level.
A Cultural Tapestry and Tranquil Respite
Beyond the awe-inspiring scenery, the Colca Valley is rich with pre-Incan and colonial history. Pre-Incan agricultural terraces still in use today paint the canyon walls in vivid detail. Quaint, traditional villages like Yanque and Maca dot the landscape, preserving the cultural heritage of the Collagua and Cabana peoples through colorful markets and intricate handicrafts. After a long day of hiking, visitors can relax in one of the valley's many volcanic hot springs, such as those at La Calera or Chacapi.
