OVERFLIGHT NAZCA LINES:
The Nazca Lines, an array of ancient geoglyphs etched into the Peruvian desert, have captivated imaginations for nearly a century. While you can see a few figures from an observation tower, nothing compares to the experience of a small plane overflight. It is the only way to truly grasp the monumental scale and mysterious purpose of these intricate designs.
More fringe theories have also emerged, including the unsubstantiated idea that extraterrestrials created the lines as landing strips. Today, researchers are using new technologies like drones and AI to continue studying the Nazca Lines, leading to the discovery of hundreds of new geoglyphs in recent years.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, the Nazca Lines continue to captivate the public with their scale, artistry, and enduring mystery. They stand as a testament to the creativity and spiritual complexity of the ancient Nazca people.
What to Expect on Your Flight
Flights typically depart from the small María Reiche Neuman Airport near the town of Nazca. After a quick briefing and identity check, you’ll board a Cessna aircraft, which seats about five passengers, each with a window seat.
The pilot will give you a map and announce each geoglyph as you approach. To ensure everyone gets a perfect view, the plane banks steeply from side to side over each figure. This maneuver can cause motion sickness, so taking medication beforehand is highly recommended.
The best time to fly is in the morning, between 7:00 and 11:00 a.m.. Winds are typically calmer, and the softer light enhances the contrast, making the geoglyphs easier to see and photograph. It's advisable to book your flight in advance, especially during the dry season from May to September
