TIAWANACO VISIT

Deep in the Bolivian highlands, near the southern shores of Lake Titicaca, lies Tiawanaco (Tiwanaku) — one of the most enigmatic archaeological sites in South America. Once the heart of a powerful pre-Inca civilization, this ancient city flourished around 500–900 AD and continues to captivate historians, archaeologists, and travelers alike.

Tiawanaco is more than a collection of ruins; it’s a monumental testament to human ingenuity. The site features massive stone structures like the Akapana Pyramid, the Kalassasaya Temple, and the world-famous Gateway of the Sun, each carved with incredible precision from giant stone blocks that weigh several tons. The purpose of these structures remains shrouded in mystery — some believe they served astronomical or religious functions, connecting the people with celestial deities.

Walking through Tiawanaco feels like stepping into an ancient riddle. The carvings of divine figures, intricate geometric patterns, and advanced engineering techniques suggest a civilization far ahead of its time.

Today, Tiawanaco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Bolivia’s cultural pride. It invites every visitor to marvel at the lost wisdom of the Andes and ponder the mysteries of one of humanity’s earliest highland empires.

Early in the morning, we will be transferred in a private vehicle to the Aymara route, visiting CHUCUITO (Temple of Fertility), on the way we will also appreciate the rock deformation which has an appearance of animals like the tired horse, elephant, rabbit, and there is also a rock carved in the form of a door, which is known as the Devil's gateway or Church of the Sun, Aramu Wall and Opa Amaya.

Then we will arrive at Juli known as the Little Aymara Rome its reputation for its rich architecture and art treasures of the church saved Juli whose construction is attributed in most cases and so the Jesuits reached the border PERU-BOLIVIA DESAGUADERO, where we will have a transfer with the Operator of Bolivia, from here we will go towards the town of Tiwanaku, arriving at 12:00. Pause for lunch and then visit the ruins starting with the Lithic Museum and the Museum of Ceramics for introduction to the Tiwanaku culture.

Then follow the walk through the archaeological site, visiting the major temples like the Akapana pyramid, the semi-subterranean Temple, and the Temple of Kalasasay, where you can admire the beauty and quality of the artistic representation of the Puma Punku or Puerta del Sol and the monolith Ponce.

Return to Puno Desaguadero approximately at 06:30 p.m.
