Then, you will tour the Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral and the beautiful Church of the Society of Jesus, among other colonial buildings, are located.

You will then continue the journey to the colonial church of San Cristóbal to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Afterward, you will go on to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an Inca building known for its massive walls of hewn stone, located in a strategic location, on a hill, with a broad view of the city of Cuzco. Later, you will visit the important archaeological complexes of Qenko and Puca Pucara.

Lost in history, Machu Picchu was not discovered until 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham but was built in the middle of the XV century.

The name of the citadel comes from the Quechua language means “Old Mountain” and apparently was the principal Inca’s Sanctuary. After a guided visit to the ruins, you will have a self-service lunch at Mapi Sanctuary.

Resting in the nearby palm fronds are other species, such as the Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Sulphury Flycatcher, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Lettered Aracari, Chestnut-eared Aracari, White-lored Euphonia, Red-eyed Vireo, and Spotted Tody-Flycatcher.

Day 9: Iquitos.

You will wake up very early and head off to the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, in the company of an expert birdwatching guide.

You will hike through the reserve on narrow trails to reach the famed white-sand forests, where you can catch glimpses of such birds as the Ancient Antwren, Gray-legged Tinamou (which you can only observe from December to March), Mishana Tyrannulet, Zimmer’s Antbird, Pompadour Cotinga, Allpahuayo Antbird, Brown-banded Puffbird, Citron-belied Attila, Saffron-crested Tyran-Manakin, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, and, with a lot of luck, the recently described Iquitos Gnatcatcher.

After this adventure, you will set off to the comfortable Zungarococha Bungalows for a nice rest and a delicious lunch in the midst of this natural paradise. In the afternoon, it’s time to visit Lake Zungarococha, in a flooded, black water palm forest, to find other birds that inhabit this region: the Orange-crowned Manakin, plus the rare Amazonian Scrub-Flycatcher and Black-crested Antshrike, as well as the Pied Puffbird.

Other birds in the palm forest you can see are the Point-tailed Palmcreeper and Sulphury Flycatcher.
