Our guided visit to Lima allows you to see the Historical Center: Plaza Mayor ("Main Square"), the Government Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the City Hall, and old streets with colonial mansions and Moorish balconies. You will also visit a historic convent, an icon of colonial architecture.

The tour goes all the way to the modern district of San Isidro, where you’ll appreciate Huaca Huallamarca, a pre-Incan pyramid made out of adobe, and end up in the touristic district of Miraflores, where you will observe the Pacific Ocean coast from the vast seafront.

Day 3: Lima / Cusco.

Transfer to Lima airport.
Flight to Cusco city
Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be transferred to your hotel.

You will visit the city of Cusco, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and home to a somewhat particular essence. The tour will start at the temple of Koricancha, an ancient Inca palace and main worship center of the Sun God, where the order of the Dominicans built an incredible church that can still be seen there. Then, you will tour the Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral and the beautiful Church of the Society of Jesus, among other colonial buildings, are located.

You will then continue the journey to the colonial church of San Cristóbal to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Afterward, you will go on to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an Inca building known for its massive walls of hewn stone, located in a strategic location, on a hill, with a broad view of the city of Cuzco. Later, you will visit the important archaeological complexes of Qenko and Puca Pucara.

Included: Breakfast.

Day 4: Sacred Valley.

Full day excursion through the scenic landscape of Urubamba Valley; known as the “Incas Sacred Valley". You will arrive at Pisac town and you will see the colorful Pisac Market, where the local Indians meet to sell their merchandise, keeping the tradition as they have done it for centuries. The tour continues to the Ollantaytambo town where you will climb up to the imposing Inca fortress at the top of the mountain. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.

Overnight at the Posada del Inca Yucay Hotel.
Included: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 5: Sacred Valley.

You will arrive at Aguas Calientes Station in Machu-Picchu and then you will be transported by bus to Machu Picchu citadel, one of the most renowned examples of the Inca’s architecture, surrounded by an amazing landscape of the lush forest. Lost in history, Machu Picchu was not discovered until 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham but was built in the middle of the XV century.

The name of the citadel comes from the Quechua language means “Old Mountain” and apparently was the principal Inca’s Sanctuary. After a guided visit to the ruins, you will have a self-service lunch at Mapi Sanctuary.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 6: Machu Picchu.

A two-hour walk along the Vilcanota River follows the railroad tracks into the Mandor Valley, inhabited by varied and fascinating birdlife, including cock-of-the-rock, speckle-faced parrots, and green jays. Relax and bathe under a secluded waterfall, before walking back to the hotel in the shadow of Machu Picchu. At the appointed time, you will return to the station to take your train ride to Ollantaytambo station at the Sacred Valley.

Transfer from Ollanta station to your hotel in Cusco.

After settling in, we have organized a boat ride on Lake Quistococha for the first bird-watching experience, searching for the Amazonian Parrotlet, a small and rather unknown parrot. Resting in the nearby palm fronds are other species, such as the Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Sulphury Flycatcher, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Lettered Aracari, Chestnut-eared Aracari, White-lored Euphonia, Red-eyed Vireo, and Spotted Tody-Flycatcher.

Overnight at Heliconia River Lodge.

Day 9: Iquitos.

You will wake up very early and head off to the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, in the company of an expert birdwatching guide.

You will hike through the reserve on narrow trails to reach the famed white-sand forests, where you can catch glimpses of such birds as the Ancient Antwren, Gray-legged Tinamou (which you can only observe from December to March), Mishana Tyrannulet, Zimmer’s Antbird, Pompadour Cotinga, Allpahuayo Antbird, Brown-banded Puffbird, Citron-belied Attila, Saffron-crested Tyran-Manakin, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, and, with a lot of luck, the recently described Iquitos Gnatcatcher.

After this adventure, you will set off to the comfortable Zungarococha Bungalows for a nice rest and a delicious lunch in the midst of this natural paradise. In the afternoon, it’s time to visit Lake Zungarococha, in a flooded, black water palm forest, to find other birds that inhabit this region: the Orange-crowned Manakin, plus the rare Amazonian Scrub-Flycatcher and Black-crested Antshrike, as well as the Pied Puffbird.

Other birds in the palm forest you can see are the Point-tailed Palmcreeper and Sulphury Flycatcher.
